The European electric scooter and motorcycle market is in trouble. Taking into account the Western European market (30 countries including the UK), the segment declined by 29% in 2023, while in Eastern Europe (8 countries including Turkey) sales surged by 264%.

Please note that the reported data relates to the motorcycle industry and includes not only mopeds, scooters, 2/3 wheelers such as motorcycles, but even other vehicles typically included in the industry such as all-terrain vehicles. Unlike ACEA and other local sources such as FEBIAC, we do not consider e-bikes within the industry, even because the available data only concerns registered bikes and is limited to countries that require license plates (Belgium, Netherlands, France).

Electric Two-Wheeler Market Trends 2023

As you can see by reading our report on the European motorcycle market, the industry does not seem to be losing momentum due to a combination of negative factors, starting with increased global logistics, raw material, energy costs and market acceleration. Covid 19 is now over, while rising interest rates and reduced purchasing power may hit the market in the future.

However, when looking at the electric two-wheeler segment, the data is surprisingly different.

Taking into account the Western European market (30 countries including the UK), the segment declined by 29% in 2023, while in Eastern Europe (8 countries including Turkey) sales surged by 264%.

As a region, the EV market declined 2.4%, accounting for 4.4% of the industry.

Looking at a single country, Europe's largest EV market is Turkey, which grew 280% last year.

In second place is France (-16.1%), ahead of the Netherlands (-40.2%), Italy (-27.3%), Spain (-24.2%) and Germany (-55%).

The top-selling OEM is Turkey's Arora (+156%), ahead of Motolux (+3019%), Kuba (+644%), Vmoto Soco (-51.8%) and RKS (+174%).
